In April, Unica School for Autism actively participated in Autism Acceptance and Awareness Month by organizing a series of events aimed at highlighting the developmental disability and promoting understanding and acceptance.
Key Activities Included:
- Daily Activities: Throughout April, the school engaged learners in various activities designed to uplift them and raise awareness about autism. These activities included virtual introductions to internationally known authors, scientists, and artists with autism.
- Blue Balloon Release: To spread the message of autism awareness, the school released blue helium-filled balloons labeled with the Unica School name over Pretoria.
- Community Engagement: The school organized events involving parents and children to embrace the uniqueness of autism and foster a supportive community. Activities included chess games, fun quizzes for parents, cupcake icing, and a picnic, encouraging social interaction among parents, learners, and staff members.
Quotes from the Event:
- Ilze Pansegrouw, Speech-Language Therapist: “Every day is an opportunity to learn about autism. It is important to highlight the need to help improve the quality of life of those with autism so that they can lead full and meaningful lives as an integral part of society.”
- Julie Perumal, School Principal: “Although autism awareness month has ended, the school remains dedicated to increasing autism awareness through outreach activities to educate the greater community about the condition.”
These efforts underscore Unica School’s commitment to creating an inclusive environment where learners with autism can thrive and be celebrated for their unique strengths and abilities.
